The heat was rising in the hot summer afternoon and so naturally I was spending it inside. It was so unbearable that my siblings and I were hiding out in the basement like a bunch of trolls. We had a common understand that the realms of fantasy and reality fused together every so often and it made for a nice experience in our minds. Collectively, we could have imagined the heat away, but my middle sister was too preoccupied with all of the other problems in her teenage life.

My oldest sister and I played pretend from as far back as I can remember. She nurtured a part of my imagination that no amount of TV could satisfy. Allowing my mind to expand in the direction it did has done incredible things for me. But at the time, I was not looking for an imaginary land in our basement. I wanted to try our hand at a new computer game my father had bought for us. We were struggling to find a way off an island and we needed to find a magic map. We were going to save the kingdom and marry the princess if all went according to plan.

We had no need for a hint book, but from time to time we would ask our father for a tip or two on how to handle a situation. The Kings Quest Games from the Sierra gaming company filled our heads with wild adventures and we treasured every minute of them. When we were not playing them, we were acting out our favorite moments from the game, using costume pieces and props we found lying around the house.

It was going to be a dangerous adventure today, so we made a lunch and brought it down the steps. I remembered we had to be very careful not to slip or spill anything around the computer and thus deactivate out only means of entertainment. We nibbled on sandwiches and tackled a mountain side with riddles and questions that could only be answered by reading a companions guide book and deciphering clues.

These were some of the happiest times of my young summers. Trying to make characters do outrageous tasks, saving our game files and restoring when we made intentional guffaws marked our afternoons. Slowly, as we got older, we found less and less time to allow our minds the chance to revert to childhood simplicities and joys. We were growing up too quickly, but some of our favorite lines continued to interrupt our holiday gatherings. Private jokes between my sister and I kept us together, watching Youtube clips of the games we grew up with, howling with laughter the whole way through.

When I was home for college one summer, another sweltering day, I made myself some lunch and locked eyes with my sister. She knew what I was thinking, but it was an impossibility. The games we once played had long since been out of commission and the computer we played them on was beyond repairs. I sat at our table, trying to think of a way out of this. My mind was racing like it used to when we would play. I contemplated trying to find a legitimate site to download them from and decided against it.

I took to the streets to try and find a game store that might have a clue as to where I could find my childhood. At a Target, of all places, I discovered an anthology collection of the complete seven original games. I had never even played the first three in the series. My heart began to flutter and I quickly dug into my pocket for whatever money I had. I retrieved a twenty dollar bill and grabbed the game box off of the display wall. After purchasing the game pack, I drove home as quickly as possible and shouted for my sister. I held out the pack and announced the return of our youth. She danced with excitement and we produced our laptops, praying they would be compatible.

After a few hours of repeated attempts at the
software
installation, we were successful. We had to finally give up the hopes of being able to save our data properly. I am sure if we had tried a little bit harder or even asked a professional for some assistance we would have been fine. But we were stubborn and eager to play. There were only so many hours in the day after all and the summer was slowly closing in around us. We secreted away into the basement and cooled our bodies and minds.
