How come Sony lost the video game console war this time?
remember when Sony introduced PS the first time it killed both Sega and Nintendo at their own war, not to mention the console war back in the days was more like Sega vs Nintendo only, the other consoles couldnt stand a chance to touch those two giants, but when PS came along, both Sega and Nintendo faced a new competitor that they wished they never had to face. but this time it seems like finally Sony lost the war and most game company rather support Xbox or Wii. PS3 is way behind Xbox360 and Wii…
We cant say anything for certain, just yet.
The seventh generation is only half done, we are in its fourth year and these days most generations can last up to 8 years.
The sixth generation is still an ongoing concern, the PS 2 might be on its death bed, but its still not quite dead.
You must also keep in mind certain factors.
The PS 3 was released last.
It was the most expensive of them all, at 600 which had people balking at the time, despite what they got for their money. ( Basically all 3 PlayStation’s. A blu ray dvd player, which at that time was well over a 1000 on its own. A DVD player and a SA-CD player.)
Sony suffered from arrogance and hubris. They just assumed the PS 3 would do well, despite the high price tag and the bizarre or non existing advertising, just on the strength of the brand name alone.
Sony muddled the water to the extreme, by releasing a multitude of different SKU’s. And worst of al by removing PS 2 backwards capability, making the machine less attractive to those of us who have a huge PS 2 back log. ( Despite what some may want you to believe, just because a game is old does not mean its not worth playing. The PS 2 was fully backwards compatible. The X-box 360 is mostly backwards compatible. The Wii is backwards compatible, these days its an expected feature, and Sony removing it in the third revision is unacceptable. )
Buying an older PS 3 is still a minefield, because your never quite sure what you will get.
Sony didn’t lower the price to an extensive margin, until late last year in August, with the PS 3 Slim. And at 299, the PS 3 is stil the most expensive seventh gen console out there, but its popularity is increasing, due to the price cut.
It finally received a slew of killer aps last year, that were not metal gear.
Sony also faced some stiff competition from the X-box 360, who was released first and has a whole library of cheap games to choose from. And the Wii who is currently the best selling console, but is losing steam due to its gimmicky nature.
It is too early to count the PS 3 out just yet.
And some might say that the Wii doesn’t count, because it doesn’t aim at traditional gamers.
That the Wii has 100% of a new market secured, while the PS 3 and X-box 360 battle it out for the traditional gamer market.
Make of that what you will.
